Member of the Industrial Big Data and Intelligent Systems Division, Chinese Mechanical Engineering Society (CMES). For many years he has engaged in teaching and research on intelligent robotics, digital manufacturing, integrated manufacturing, intelligent control, and intelligent (smart) manufacturing. He has led and completed multiple national-level projects, including those funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China and the National High-Tech R&D Program (863 Program), as well as numerous provincial/ministerial projects. In particular, he has developed a distinctive research track in the integration and optimization of smart manufacturing. In 2014, he took the lead in integrating the Service Internet, the Content–Knowledge Web, the Internet of Things, and the Interpersonal (social) Web with manufacturing technologies to propose a new-generation smart-manufacturing paradigm—Wisdom Manufacturing. He has since refined, enriched, extended, and completed this framework to form a theory and technology system for human–machine–object collaborative wisdom manufacturing and its resource-allocation optimization methods, and further extended the idea of Wisdom Manufacturing (socio-cyber-physical production systems) to inclusive manufacturing, autonomous intelligent manufacturing, human-centered manufacturing, and the industrial metaverse.
Professor Yao has published nearly 400 papers in scientific journals and international conferences. Some have been selected as ESI Highly Cited Papers, CMES Outstanding Papers, Highly Cited Papers of the Journal of Intelligent Manufacturing, and Excellent/Cover Papers of Computer Integrated Manufacturing Systems. Over the past four years he has been continuously listed among “China’s Most Cited Researchers” and the “World’s Top 2% Scientists.” He holds more than 20 Chinese patents and has authored seven monographs (textbooks), including Introduction to Artificial Intelligence and Intelligent Manufacturing, Theory and Technology of Wisdom Manufacturing, and Manufacturing Internet of Things Technology. He has established collaborations with the University of Massachusetts, Northeastern University, and the Georgia Institute of Technology (USA); the University of Strathclyde and the University of Glasgow (UK); the University of Auckland (New Zealand); and the University of Macau, among others. He serves on the editorial boards of Modular Machine Tool & Automatic Manufacturing Technique and Automation & Information Engineering, and is a guest editor for several international journals.
